Start with Your Provincial Regulator
Social work is regulated provincially. Each province and territory has a regulatory body—find yours through the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) or the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). Contact the regulator directly to get the exact list of documents and steps.
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
Most regulators require an ECA to verify that your foreign degree is equivalent to a Canadian credential. Use a designated organization such as World Education Services (WES) or the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS). The process can take 2 to 4 months, so start early.
Language Proficiency Tests
For English-speaking provinces (most except Quebec), you may need the IELTS (Academic) or CELPIP. For Quebec, a TEF or TCF for French is required. Check the minimum scores with your regulator.
Licensing Exams
Social workers in Canada typically must pass the ASWB exam. There are different levels (BSW, MSW, Clinical). Confirm which exam applies to your education and intended role.
Immigration Pathways
Credential recognition can boost your immigration application. Express Entry awards points for a completed ECA and a valid job offer.
